Program Note
In writing this piece, the sentiments of renewal, awakening, and rejuvenation were on my mind. These are my hopes for our society as we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sentiments are initially expressed as sentimental chords that slowly awaken the imagined city, echoing its loneliness in the trumpet, which triggers more tender moments. Eventually a signal in the timpani boldly declares a change of pace, ushering in greater rhythmic activity - perhaps the city awakening - that takes us to a new arrival. What sort of arrival? Well, in life after the pandemic, that's really up to us, isn't it? And that's also where the piece itself becomes less programmatic and the musical muse takes over. "Urban Spring" was commissioned by the Queer Urban Orchestra in celebration of pride 2021 with great gratitude.
